REFIT and Supplier Lite
MEC is recognised as a leader in the operation of the Renewable Energy Feed in Tariff
(and its new variants) since 2008. It has brought self-suppliers into the market to
maximise the benefit from the REFIT structure, and advised on power purchase
agreements for multiple clients.
Smart Metering in Ireland
MEC supported a client to deliver both the gas and electricity smart metering user trials
in a retail environment, from tariff and bill design, to implementation and on to the
customer experience. We were the only organisation to have direct operational retail
experience in both gas and electricity smart technologies in Ireland. MEC coordinated
the requirements documentation for all billing and data transfer between Networks
businesses and suppliers, as requested by the National Smart Meter Programme. MEC
has also experience of the electricity prepayment KeyPad solution for the Irish and
Northern Irish markets.
Single Electricity Market, Development and Modifications
MEC managed the delivery of the Agreed Procedures and supported elements of the
Single Electricity Market market rules (the SEM Trading & Settlement Code) during its
development. MEC was responsible in drafting the first modification to the SEM Trading
& Settlement Code that brought a new technology into the market - the Aggregated
Generator Unit.
Meter Data and its Commercial Implications
Markets do not move without the data to support pricing and closing of transactions.
MEC, during its time in the Regulatory Authorities, was responsible for coordinating with
EirGrid, SONI, ESB Networks and NIE T&D to bring meter data from each metered site
in the country, demand and generation, in a consistent format to the Single Electricity
Market. This ubiquitous need for meter data has brought MEC experience in the retail
markets, use-of-system charges, and the implications of different generator metering
options on commercial outcomes under REFIT and the Single Electricity Market.
Regulatory Consultations and Representation
MEC has worked in a System Operator, in the Regulatory Authorities, and alongside the
Networks businesses on several projects. Our company has also written consultation
papers for some of these clients. This has given MEC a detailed knowledge of the
operation of the industry consultation processes, be it for the all-island wholesale market,
or the jurisdictional retail markets. MEC has responded to consultations on topics as
wide ranging as market rules (e.g. capacity payments, pricing mechanisms and market
scheduling), system operations (e.g. dispatch principles, ancillary services), and has
represented clients at meetings and public forums with the key industry players.
Market Entry
MEC has assisted multiple clients in entering the Single Electricity Market, either
completing the registration or acting as a reviewer and advisor, depending on the clients
wishes.
Historical Market Analysis
We have provided assessment of past market operation for different types of market
players (e.g. generators, suppliers, windfarms, storage technologies). Note that MEC
does not do market forecasts and price prediction for clients, but can advise where to
procure such information from some of our partner energy consultancies.
